On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Essar Foundation’s COO – CSR, Dominic Dsouza, was invited as the Chief Guest at the All India Institute of Local Self-Government’s (AIILSG) event. The gathering, comprising 300 enthusiastic youth, including girls from Mumbai city and tribal areas of Palghar, Nandegram, and Pune, marked a significant moment in advancing the dialogue on women’s empowerment.
This year’s Women’s Day celebration focused on the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerating Progress,” echoing the sentiments advocated by UN Women. As part of the event, two videos showcasing Essar Foundation’s initiatives were presented, shedding light on the transformative impact of empowering women.
In his address, Dominic Dsouza touched upon various crucial subjects, highlighting the significant role of women in societal advancement and the value of investing in their growth. He highlighted the intrinsic connection between women’s advancement and broader development outcomes, proposing strategies and environments conducive to nurturing opportunities for girls and women.
Mr. Dsouza also acknowledged the transformative impact of sports in fostering confidence and leadership qualities among women, sharing personal stories that depicted how sports can positively influence one’s life journey. Furthermore, he discussed the importance of community engagement in the holistic development of young individuals and reaffirmed Essar’s commitment to prioritising women’s advancement across its initiatives.
The event also featured esteemed personalities such as Shweta Gupta, Sr. Executive Director of AIILSG’s CSR Centre, Prof. Dr. Mukesh Kanaskar, Dy. Director-General of AIILSG, and Swati Sonavane Dsouza and Deepali Sabale from AIILSG’s International Centre of EQUI-T. Their presentations on “Empowerment of Women from Tribal Areas” and “Sports for Women’s Empowerment” added valuable insights to the discourse.
Furthermore, the event celebrated the achievements of several children from marginalised backgrounds, especially in sports, underscoring the transformative potential of equal opportunities.
Established in 1926, AIILSG has been at the forefront of community development across 471 vulnerable settlements, spanning tribal, rural, and urban slums. With a special emphasis on marginalised populations, including children, women, youth, and indigenous communities, AIILSG aligns its efforts with the Government of India’s aspirations, focusing on aspirational districts and blocks.
