Sustainability framework

As an organisation, our key sustainability achievements include:

  • Aligning individual business plans with key sustainability objectives
  • Bringing sustainability onto the boardroom agenda for most businesses
  • Benchmarking our environment, social and governance performance
  • Improved disclosure, reporting and assurance at the national and global level
  • Establishing the Essar Foundation to spearhead our social responsibility initiatives
  • Being invited to provide thought leadership at international working groups to promote sustainability reporting, such as GRI CRESS and G4 Application Level
HEALTH & SAFETY

With over 8,000 employees in four continents, safeguarding the health and safety of our workforce is paramount. With a strict adherence to industrial safety rules and zero-tolerance towards unsafe work practices, we work towards institutionalising a culture of safety across sites. All our operational sites have dedicated HSE (health, safety & environment) teams led by senior executives who are responsible for safety reporting, training and compliance at their respective sites.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Our employees are our ambassadors of sustainability and our strongest assets. Ensuring that our employees get ample opportunities to learn, perform and engage has been one of our focus areas towards employee retention and growth. At Essar, our employee policies are implemented at the company level, business level, and at the site level keeping in mind our highly diverse and globally distributed workforce.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

Essar Foundation was established in 2011 to spearhead Essar’s community engagement and social responsibility initiatives. Essar Foundation is active in engaging the local communities at all our operational sites in India.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

Each business of Essar is led by a competent Board and senior management. There are company level policies that all businesses adhere to, in addition to their prescribed policies and procedures. These include  Sexual Harassment Policy | Open Door Policy | Crisis Communication Policy | Group Information Security Policy

RISK MANAGEMENT

Identification, prevention, mitigation and prevention of all types of risk are an important part of our company level Sustainability Policy. Every Essar business has comprehensive methods in place to assess, monitor and communicate risks to all members of the organization.

PRODUCT RESPONSIBILITY

Our products and services lay the groundwork for all our economic activity. Our businesses benefit from our complete forward and backward integration that allows us to have complete control on the quality of our products and services, thus allowing us to serve our customers consistently and efficiently.

As a company, we are cognizant of the environmental impact of our activities and have strong policies and culture in place to ensure that our businesses have the maximum positive impact on the environment and stakeholders.
