Essar Shipping is India’s second largest private sector shipping company, which has the youngest fleet in the country with a combined deadweight tonnage of 1.12 million. The Company also operates an oil & gas drilling business that provides contract drilling services to oil & gas companies across the globe. This business owns a fleet of land and offshore rigs.
With a 40-year track record, Essar Shipping has invested USD 6.61 billion in building and modernising its fleet. The Company has increased its cargo handling from 17 MT in FY 2017-18 to 19 MT in FY 2018-19, and is aiming to clock 22 MT in the current financial year.
The Company is a pioneer in coastal shipping in India and has a 20 percent market share in the dry bulk cargo segment. With the Indian port sector being driven by high growth in external trade, and the Government targeting a port capacity of 3,200 MT by 2020, the Indian shipping sector and Essar Shipping are both poised for a significant upswing in maritime trade. The regulatory environment supports further improvement of the sector with government policies, like ROFR (Right of First Refusal) for Indian Controlled Tonnage and tonnage tax benefits.
The company aims to grow by adding tanker assets to its portfolio aimed at securing captive business in the European region. Essar Shipping has also joined the worldwide effort to fight climate change—its entire fleet has switched over to IMO-complaint fuel, capping sulphur content at 0.5% (down from 3.5% previously), with effect from 1st January 2020.
OGD Services Limited (f.k.a. Essar Oilfield Services India Limited) is a contract drilling services provider for Oil & Gas drilling, including Coal Bed Methane (CBM). With an international presence, it provides customized drilling solutions to an esteemed list of clients that include international oil majors, PSU’s and private players.
The company owns and operates a diversified fleet of 15 Land Rigs with capacities ranging from 250 HP to 2000 HP. OGD’s Schramm Land Rig (MR #09), with a capacity of 750 HP, has set new benchmarks in the industry by drilling the deepest Horizontal C multilateral CBM Well in India. In addition, the Rig successfully drilled the first CBM well in India (referred to as the Reach Well) that adjoins another well (referred to as the Offset Well) horizontally (both these wells are 1 KM apart) to optimise production. OGD’s Schramm Land Rig (MR #11), with a capacity of 750 HP, has set new performance benchmarks for the industry by drilling a record of four wells in one month (with depths of 1400m, 900m, 1140m and 1040m respectively), achieving an unprecedented commercial speed among drilling Rigs.
OGD also operates Essar Wildcat, a semi-submersible rig which is known among drilling contractors for its performance and exceptional safety record, having achieved more than 11 years of nil Loss Time Incident (LTI) in 2019. The Essar Wildcat was recently recognised by Halliburton for “Best Performance in Tripping Circulation (Deep water)”.
