Last week, Viral Gathani, Senior Managing Director of Essar Energy Transition (EET), was delighted to present at the Institute of Directors’ (IOD) ‘London Global Convention on Corporate Governance and Sustainability.’
After an inaugural address from His Excellency, Vikram Doraisami, High Commissioner of India to the UK, Viral joined highly esteemed guests and distinguished keynote speakers as part of a panel discussion on the ‘Emerging Challenges for Boards in the New World Economy.’
With an MA in Economics (first class honours) and an MPhil in International Relations (with distinction), both from the University of Cambridge, Viral has over 30 years’ experience across energy and resources corporates, investment banking and private equity globally. Viral took to the stage to discuss a range of topics and explained the EET approach to delivering on the “Board’s role on integrating ESG into investment decision making”.
This high-profile event was a perfect platform for Viral to showcase Essar’s energy transition strategy and in particular the formation of the new EET business which is investing US$3.6 billion in delivering low carbon energy transition solutions over the next five years. US$2.4 billion will be invested across its site in the UK to create the UK’s leading energy transition hub in the North West of England and US$1.2 billion will be invested in India.
The UK investment will see Essar deliver the UK’s first low carbon refinery, the development of 1 gigawatt (GW) of blue hydrogen for the UK market, with follow-on capacity set to reach 3.8GW, the production of 1 GW of green ammonia in India, targeted at UK and international markets, the delivery of the infrastructure for future fuels, and the development of 1 MT of low carbon biofuels.
The London Convention was attended by leaders, policy makers, academics, jurists and professionals in business, finance, corporate governance and sustainability from across the world. The renowned ‘Golden Peacock Awards’ for ‘Corporate Governance’, ‘Sustainability’, ‘ESG’ and ‘Risk Management’ were also presented while a Global Business Meet and Luncheon at the House of Lords also took place.
