In 2022, we shared the incredible story of a little girl with big dreams — Durga Gunjal, a gifted young skater from Lasalgaon, who overcame life’s toughest beginnings to make her mark on the national stage. Raised at the Jay Janardan Swami Anath Budh Aashram and nurtured by her loving caretakers whom she calls Papa-Mummy, Durga’s journey touched the hearts of many.
Recognising her spark, Essar Foundation stepped in to support her dream, backing her training and providing essential resources to help her focus on what she does best — skating with passion, precision, and pride. What began as a quiet dream in a small village has since become a story of national pride and international recognition.
Since 2021, Durga’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. She rose to victory at the Nashik District Skating Championship, followed by a gold medal at the Mission Olympic Skating Meet. Her growing confidence and commitment saw her become a National Champion at the Olympic Nationals, and later, she brought home a bronze medal from the National Championship in Goa, standing tall among older, more experienced competitors.
And now, in 2025, Durga has taken a giant leap — representing India at an international tournament held in Thailand, where she delivered a stunning performance that earned her not just a medal, but one of the country’s most prestigious honours: the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award for excellence in sports.
At this young age, Durga stands as a living proof that with talent, determination, and the right support, even the most distant dreams can be achieved. Her journey from the quiet lanes of Lasalgaon to the global skating arena is a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when belief is met with opportunity.
We at Essar are proud to have been a part of Durga’s rise and remain committed to supporting her journey as she continues to break barriers and chase her dreams — with wheels on her feet and courage in her heart.
