Due to its unparalleled popularity and association with positive values, sport is definitely one of the most effective ways to help development of people and communities. It is also a powerful tool that breaks down all barriers and helps the youth channelise their energy positively, especially in districts like Dantewada that are impacted by insurgency. The Sarpanch and Secretaries of Gram Panchayat Palnar, in association with Essar Foundation, and the villagers organised the rural sports tournament in the village on the 13th and 14th of June 2018.
A tournament of interesting and competitive rural games was organised at Bajarpara in Palnar. An enthusiastic response made it possible to bring a large number of people together to play, grow and bond across the communities. The tournament was efficiently managed by the Essar Foundation team and active local volunteers. Children, both at junior and senior levels, participated in games like carrom, chess, and volleyball, while adults participated in local traditional games like leaf-plate making, archery, lighting fire using bamboo sticks, tug of war, and date-fruit eating contests. Contests were also held in rangoli art, drawing, dance, speech, and singing.
During the two-day event, over 500 participants across different villages and age groups participated and showcased their talent to nearly 2,000 spectators from 6 hamlets of Palnar Gram Panchayat. Even the dearth of appropriate sports equipment did not deter the enthusiasm with which women, children and youth participated.
“Such games, held regularly, could keep our village youth active. And our women can get an opportunity to take time out of their daily chores for something joyful…” said the Sarpanch of Palnar. The day concluded with prize distribution to winners of various games and appreciation to all the participants. Public representatives, ward members, and local leaders were invited for valedictory function. Amidst loud applauses, Essar Foundation awarded all winners of junior and senior categories. The winners of rural games were awarded prizes of utility, including agricultural tools and implements.
