Stanlow, Cheshire – 12 August 2025 — Essar Energy Transition’s Stanlow Terminals Ltd is undergoing a major transformation as it positions itself at the forefront of the country’s energy transition. Already the UK’s largest independent bulk liquid storage provider, the company launched a strategic investment programme in Spring 2025 to modernise its terminal infrastructure and expand its capabilities in low-carbon and future fuels.
The recent turnaround event marked a significant milestone in this journey. Key upgrades included the commencement of enabling works to support the rollout of energy-efficient crude transfer pumps, extensive maintenance on large crude lines and critical control valve overhauls to reduce operational risk, and the recommissioning of a 100,000m³ crude storage tank at Tranmere to deliver maximum online capacity of the crude tank farm.
These improvements are not only enhancing efficiency and safety but also enabling improved port operations and more flexible handling of fuel imports.
Stanlow Terminals is investing in infrastructure to support the fuels of the future. This includes the plans to develop the UK’s largest biofuels storage hub, a hydrogen transport hub for multi-modal distribution, and facilities to support carbon dioxide transport and storage – key enablers of the UK’s net-zero ambitions.
Mike Gaynon, Chief Executive of Stanlow Terminals Ltd comments “This is a defining moment for Stanlow Terminals. We are not just upgrading infrastructure – we are building the backbone of the UK’s low-carbon energy future. Our investments today will ensure we remain a critical enabler of energy security and sustainability for decades to come.”
With these strategic investments, Essar Energy Transition is doing more than upgrading infrastructure—it’s building a platform for the UK’s energy future. By combining smart engineering with a clear focus on low-carbon fuels, the company is becoming a key hub for the next generation of energy. From biofuels to hydrogen and carbon capture, Essar Energy Transition is helping to shape a more secure energy system for the decades ahead.
