On 2nd September 2023, Avid Learning presented The Mumbai Cultural Tracker, Cultural Confluences: Empowering Creative Industries of the Future, organized as part of the Culture Working Group under India’s G20 Presidency in collaboration with FICCI, UNESCO, Teamwork Arts at Essar House, Mumbai. Over 125+ industry experts, policymakers, and cultural practitioners and arts & culture stakeholders joined the conference and an additional 250 + watched the live stream.
In this day-long conclave, industry experts, policymakers, and cultural practitioners came together to advance the dialogue on the Promotion of Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) and Creative Economy. The dialogues and discussions engaged toward developing harmonized conceptual frameworks and definitions of the creative economy and creative industries, enhancing arts education and management skills, taking forward the creativity and tech intersection, synergizing tourism, heritage, and culture, addressing key policy issues, challenges, and solutions that drive the Creative Sector.
The symposium commenced with performances by three young talents from ACE Rhapsody Association, headed by Dr. Alannah Carol Fernandes. Gisele Rodrigues who played a rendition of the National Anthem followed by Dhruv Bora and Regis Vaz. This was in line with Avid Learning’s tradition of recognizing young talent and its belief that everything we endeavor upon is ultimately dedicated to them – the future stakeholders and hopefully our art orchestrators.
SVP, Essar Group, CEO, Avid Learning, Curator, Royal Opera House, Mumbai & Member of FICCI Arts & Culture Committee Asad Lalljee welcomed the distinguished stakeholders and guests. He discussed importance of promoting the cultural and creative industries to tap into the country’s rich cultural heritage and support the livelihood generation of its people.
Asad was followed by warm words of welcome by Founder and Chairperson, Avid Learning Mrs. Madhu Ruia who spoke about the power of creativity and thanked Avid Learning’s long-standing partners and collaborators for their support.
In his context-setting speech, Managing Director, Teamwork Arts & Co-Chair, FICCI Creative Industries Sanjoy K. Roy while sharing his extensive experience and expertise in the creative industries talked about the value and impact of arts on society highlighting its immense social, cultural, and economic value to our lives.
Chief Culture Sector UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office, New Delhi Junhi Han presented an overview of the organization’s initiatives and programs related to culture, highlighting the significance of safeguarding cultural diversity, and recommendations for promoting intercultural dialogue among the G20 members and sharing recommendations from the Kashi Culture Pathway.
Past President, FICCI; Mentor, FICCI Tourism & Culture Committee & CMD, The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group Dr. Jyotsna Suri shared valuable perspectives on the intersection of tourism, hospitality, and the arts, and enhancing the overall visitor experience, fostering a richer and more immersive journey for travelers while contributing to sustainable economic growth.
The first panel discussion ‘Creative Tourism: Enhancing Engagement and Enriching Experiences’ saw an engaging conversation moderated by ManagingDirector, Teamwork Arts & Co-Chair, FICCI Creative Industries Sanjoy K. Roy with Former Corporator, Ward 227, Colaba. Chairman of Law, Revenue & General Purpose Committee, and Member of the Standing Committee, MCGM Adv. Makarand Narwekar, Content Specialist, Storyteller, and Travel Blogger Lakshmi Sharath, Past President, FICCI & Chairperson, FICCI Tourism Committee & CMD, The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group Dr. Jyotsna Suri, andCo-Founder, No Footprints Harshvardhan Tanwar. The panelists talked about the increasing importance of creativity supplementing conventional models of heritage-based cultural tourism sharing domestic and international best practices. They looked at the intersection of tourism and culture and how both sectors can be boosted through collaboration, looking at the vital need of ensuring green initiatives in this regard across sectors and leveraging Indian towns and cities to help grow jobs and contribute to the economy.
In the second session, ‘Platforms For Collaborations And Linkages’ SVP, Essar Group, CEO, Avid Learning, Curator, Royal Opera House, Mumbai & Member of FICCI Arts & Culture Committee Asad Lalljee moderated a captivating panel discussion with Producer, Director, Trustee Shri Prithviraj Kapoor Memorial Trust & Research Foundation, Prithvi Theatre Kunal Kapoor, Director & Chief Curator, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art Roobina Karode, Director Arts in India, British Council Jonathan Kennedy, Managing Trustee and Honorary Director, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum Tasneem Zakaria Mehta, and Hon. Director, Bangalore International Centre V. Ravichandar. They talked about developing platforms for sectoral frameworks and models for Culture and Creative Industries, exploring the evolving roles of artists, the potential of new technologies, the impact of cross-disciplinary partnerships, the biggest challenges, changes, and upcoming future trends in collaboration models.
The last session of the symposium ‘Arts Management And Education: Nurturing Creative Practitioners Of The Future’ was an immersive panel discussion moderated by Co-Founder, Art Links Learning, and Member of FICCI Arts & Culture Committee Sadhana Rao with Head of Theatre & Film, NCPA Bruce Guthrie, Educator, Visual Artist, and Co-Founder, PLORK School of Thought Nitesh Mohanty, Performer, Composer, Researcher, and Author Dr. Aneesh Pradhan, andManaging Director, Mukta Arts and Head of Academics, Whistling Woods International Rahul Puri, and Artist, Founder & Director, Intarsia Inlay Pvt. Ltd. Eric Sakellaropoulos. A diverse panel, representing various facets of the creative world spanning from film, music, theater, and art, collectively emphasized the critical role of creative education and arts management in nurturing the next generation of leaders capable of effectively guiding projects, organizations, and teams within the cultural and creative industries.
The Mumbai Cultural Tracker aimed to advance the dialogue on critical policy issues and challenges that drive the cultural and creative sectors, with a focus on livelihood generation, promoting quality creative expressions, creating platforms for sectoral frameworks, establishing grant and funding mechanisms, and fostering a trans-disciplinary understanding of these industries.
At Avid Learning, we believe that the true impact lies in sharing knowledge and insights. To that end, we will be documenting the G20 Mumbai and Bangalore Cultural Tracker symposiums in a comprehensive white paper. This white paper will serve as a resource for the larger community working towards the advancement of creative economies.
