SVP, Essar Group, CEO, Avid Learning, Curator, Royal Opera House, Mumbai, and Member of FICCI Arts & Culture Committee Asad Lalljee recently presented a research paper at the 22nd Association for Cultural Economics International (ACEI) conference, hosted by The Center for Cultural Affairs at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, which brought together academics, experts, and practitioners from of Arts, Culture, and Heritage to discuss the theme of ‘Cultural Economics, Coming Together: Bridging Distances, Crossing Boundaries.’
Invited by Luis César Herrero Prieto, Professor of Applied Economics, Faculty of Commerce, University of Valladolid. Asad presented the paper Cultural Creativity and Participation in India: The Impact of The Royal Opera House, Mumbai. His case study of The Royal Opera House, Mumbai offered unique dimensions beyond the traditional assessment of cultural institutions’ efficiency. It highlighted how the revival of this cultural heritage has guided the progress of other initiatives in Mumbai thereby influencing the city’s cultural panorama and fostering artistic ingenuity for future generations.
During the conference, Asad drew from his experience as a curator at The Royal Opera House and presenter of multidisciplinary programs to share insights that foster meaningful and inspiring discussions. The central themes of his presentation revolved around the advancement and democratization of arts and culture through programming at Avid Learning, the cultural philanthropy arm of Essar Group, and The Royal Opera House, Mumbai.
Overall, Asad’s research paper and presentation emphasized the intersections between economics and culture, conveying how cross-disciplinary, inclusive, and tech-forward programming can harness the untapped potential of the ecosystem, inspiring and engaging people to revive the neighborhood and create a lasting impact on the city’s cultural landscape.
