Essar is set to deploy 10,000 LNG and electric trucks across India over the next three years, supported by a network of 100 alternative fuel and charging hubs, as it scales up clean freight operations to reduce approximately one million tonnes of carbon emissions and decarbonise India’s entire freight value chain.
By integrating vehicle manufacturing, fleet management and energy infrastructure, large-scale clean freight can be commercially viable while supporting India’s climate goals.
– Madhur Taneja, CEO GreenLine Mobility Solutions Pvt Ltd.
Essar’s green mobility ecosystem follows an integrated approach where Blue Energy Motors manufactures the LNG and electric trucks, GreenLine Mobility manages fleet deployment, and Ultra Gas & Energy (UGEL) develops refuelling, fast-charging and battery-swapping infrastructure. This end-to-end model enables large-scale clean freight solutions while maintaining operational efficiency.
Under this initiative, Essar is adopting a dual-fuel strategy, deploying LNG trucks for long-haul and electric trucks for short-haul operations. LNG trucks can travel up to 1,200 km per tank and up to 2,400 km with dual tanks on a single fill, while electric trucks leverage fast-charging and battery-swapping facilities under a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model. This allows 55-tonne trucks to resume operations in under 5 minutes, with a 150 km range, maximising fleet utilisation.
Essar has already established India’s largest LNG trucking fleet, operating over 800 trucks across sectors including steel, cement, FMCG, chemicals, mining, infrastructure, e-commerce and other core industries. Collectively, these vehicles have covered more than 70 million kilometres, reducing nearly 19,756 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
UGEL forms the backbone of Essar’s clean freight infrastructure, with six operational LNG refuelling hubs located in Bhilwara, Anand, Chakan–Pune, Jalna, Toranagallu and Vallam. Each hub is future-ready, featuring electric vehicle charging and battery-swapping capabilities. Plans are underway to expand UGEL to 100 hubs across Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Karnataka, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, supported by a ₹900-crore investment.
By integrating vehicle manufacturing, fleet management and energy infrastructure, Essar is demonstrating that large-scale clean freight is commercially viable. With strategic investment, supportive policies and industry collaboration, the company aims to mainstream low-emission mobility, helping India achieve its climate goals while sustaining economic growth.
