Meet Jigna Verma, Essar’s Everyday Champion

Jigna Verma, Essar's Everyday Champion

I started my journey with Essar almost 12 years ago in 2006. My first role was of a contractual assistant with the CRG (Corporate Relations Group) team. In my role, I had the opportunity to understand industrial liasoning with Government authorities in towns and rural offices. I also presented case studies and possible solutions to plant heads and HoDs on various issues.

During the establishing of Essar Port’s Salaya jetty (along the coast of Gujarat), my role was to overlook the liasoning agreements for the coal corridor connecting projects. It was a great learning experience. After 5 long years of the team’s hard work and under the able guidance of Capt Deepak Sachdeva, the 1st vessel arrived at Salaya jetty. Being a part of these projects also helped me develop my calibre.

The best part about working at Essar is the confidence the organisation has shown in me from time to time irrespective of my gender or position. I have been given challenging tasks which in my view, would be difficult to achieve by many. However, by God’s grace and my parents’ well wishes and continuous support, I have always come out with flying colours.

19th Dec 2013 was a landmark day for me as I got my appointment letter from EBTSL.

The maritime industry is one of those global sectors, where majority of the employees are men. There is also a misconception that all the jobs in the maritime sector is at the sea. There are several career opportunities in fields such as ship designing, ship building, maritime environment/resources management and protection, training of personnel in the maritime industry, marine insurance, maritime law, ports and harbour management and administration and managing of internal water resources and many more. Hence, one should be open to opportunities that the maritime sector has to offer.
