The discussion between these prominent industry experts sparked interesting conversations on building digitised and agile factories of the future, closing skills gap and reskilling the workforce, ensuring consistency in value chains, adapting to cloud technologies, and empowering manufacturers to innovate and accelerate growth with disruptive technologies.

As part of an esteemed panel, Mr Desai touched upon some key initiatives undertaken by Essar to navigate the disruption of digitisation during the pandemic. At the onset of the pandemic and peak lockdown, Essar consolidated four of its data centers into a single third-party data center. The company also digitised its supply chain thereby making the entire process easy and seamless for various stakeholders. Also, Essar’s central procurement system takes care of the vendor management system, which is a part of the eco-system that includes tender portals and e-billing ports. These are interlocked and give long-term benefits by reducing human intervention and possibility of human errors.

On closing skills gap and reskilling the workforce, Mr Desai highlighted the benefits of technology in the organisation. At Essar Ports, the daily operational task lists have been digitised for the use of contractual staff. This helps them feed their daily activities at a click of a button. Mr. Desai concluded the session by pointing out the top supply chain trends to watch out for, such as reduced human intervention and adoption of artificial intelligence being the game changer.
