Essar is among the few Indian groups building such a green mobility ecosystem at scale, spanning vehicle manufacturing, fuel infrastructure, and fleet operations.
Essar is enabling the ecosystem as a strategic investor in Blue Energy Motors (BEM), a manufacturer of LNG and electric heavy-duty trucks, and in GreenLine Mobility Solutions, which operates green logistics fleets, while its subsidiary Ultra Gas & Energy Limited (UGEL) is building the fuel and charging backbone required to support this transition. Together, they are working to address one of the biggest bottlenecks in clean freight adoption, which is the lack of a coordinated ecosystem.
Fleet operators have long faced a classic chicken-and-egg dilemma. Investing in cleaner trucks makes little sense without dependable refuelling infrastructure, while infrastructure providers hesitate to scale without sufficient vehicle adoption. Add concerns around uptime, range, economics, and maintenance, and the transition becomes even more complicated.

Essar’s green mobility model attempts to address all these challenges simultaneously. Over the next three years, the group plans to deploy 10,000 LNG and electric trucks across India, supported by a network of 100 alternative fuel and charging hubs. The larger objective is to reduce nearly one million tonnes of carbon emissions while building a commercially viable green freight ecosystem for India’s industrial economy.
At the heart of this effort is Blue Energy Motors, which has emerged as India’s leading green heavy-duty truck manufacturer, having raised approximately $50 million in capital. Its LNG trucks are already operating across key freight corridors and industrial routes, designed specifically for long-haul applications where electrification remains challenging today.
Simultaneously, the company is investing heavily in electric heavy-duty trucks equipped with battery-swapping technology that enables battery replacement in under five minutes, addressing one of the biggest concerns around commercial EV adoption: downtime.
The operational layer of the ecosystem is driven by GreenLine Mobility Solutions, which already operates India’s largest trucking fleet with more than 1,000 trucks serving sectors including steel, cement, mining, infrastructure, chemicals, FMCG and e-commerce. This is supported by a $275 million equity investment to accelerate the decarbonisation of heavy trucking in India.
Collectively, these vehicles have covered over 70 million kilometres, reducing close to 23,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. More importantly, they demonstrate that green freight solutions can operate reliably at an industrial scale.
The third pillar and perhaps the most critical, is Infrastructure. UGEL is building the energy backbone required for clean freight adoption. The company currently operates LNG refuelling hubs in Bhilwara, Anand, Chakan-Pune, Jalna, Toranagallu and Vallam. Each facility is designed as a future-ready energy hub with LNG refuelling, EV charging and battery-swapping capabilities.
Backed by an investment of ₹900 crore, UGEL now plans to expand this network to 100 hubs across major industrial and freight corridors spanning Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Karnataka, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
This integrated strategy reflects an important reality about India’s energy transition: there is unlikely to be a single solution for freight mobility.
Long-haul trucking may rely on LNG in the near term, while shorter and fixed-route operations could increasingly shift toward electric mobility. Over time, hydrogen and other cleaner fuels may also become viable.
India’s green freight transition, therefore, will not be defined by one technology replacing another overnight. It will depend on how effectively businesses can build interoperable ecosystems that combine cleaner vehicles, reliable infrastructure and operational efficiency at scale. That is where Essar’s approach stands out.
