Essar Steel Vizag observed Chemical Disaster Prevention Day on 4th December 2015 as a homage to the victims of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. The objective was also to accentuate the importance of chemical safety at its plant.
On the night of 2-3 December 1984, the world’s worst industrial disaster unfolded in Bhopal when poisonous gas leaked out of the Union Carbide factory in the city killing more than 2,000 people and injuring thousand others. Since then, the 4th of December is observed as Chemical Disaster Prevention Day every year.
The events saw a session on fire safety measures. There were demos to showcase the correct use of various types of extinguishers, including hydrants and hoses. A mock drill was conducted to check the plant’s emergency preparedness.
A two minutes’ silence was observed to pay homage to the Bhopal gas tragedy victims.
