Essar Steel Hazira celebrates the World Steel Safety Day

Essar Steel celebrated World Steel Safety Day on 28th April 2016 at its Hazira Facility.

Established in 2014, the World Steel Safety Day focuses on reinforcing awareness of the five most common causes of safety incidents and to create a safer working environment across the entire steel industry worldwide.

Since this year’s theme was ‘Falling from height’, safety sessions were hosted at Hazira to raise awareness among employees and contract staff. The celebration started by hoisting the safety flag and taking the safety oath to make the workplace healthy, and free of injury and illness.

A safety audit was carried out at the location to identify awareness and preparedness of the employees with regards to safety.

The five most common causes of safety incidents and preventative measures identified by WordlSteel Association are:

  1. Moving machinery – Isolate, lock or pin all energy sources before any machinery is accessed.
  2. Falling from height – Provide regular training, appropriate harnessing equipment and ensure checks are in place when working at height.
  3. Falling objects – Ensure regular checks are in place to remove or secure objects in risk areas.
  4. Asphyxiation or gassing – Install sensors to test atmospheric conditions and provide training on evacuation plans in order to reduce risks of dangerous gases.
  5. Cranes – Carry out daily checks before a crane is used to ensure safe and reliable operation.
