Be it – partnering with local Government bodies or NGOs, fundraising, or providing food and medical supplies, Essar Foundation is doing everything to help communities in combating this crisis.
Our Pledge to the Nation – 2 Million Meals, 1.55 Lakh Medical Supplies
In view of the extension of the lockdown in several Indian states, which will prolong the hardships faced by the disadvantaged sections of the society, Essar Foundation has increased its ongoing commitment of providing 1.25 million meals to 2 million meals to the poor and needy affected by the Covid-19 outbreak in India.
The Foundation has already provided almost 8 lakh meals to vulnerable sections of the society, including the homeless, daily wage earners, transgenders, and women with a background of domestic violence. Of this, 20,000 meals per day is earmarked for the Maharashtra CM’s Relief Fund. Apart from the provision for daily meals, Essar Foundation has also donated the following as part of its campaign to augment Covid-19 relief efforts:
- 150,000 masks (N95 & 3Ply) and sanitisers to hospitals, police stations and BMC workers
- 5,000 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to hospitals and police stations
The relief material is being distributed across Maharashtra, the state most acutely affected by the pandemic, and pan India. In South Mumbai, which has been declared as a Covid-19 hotspot, the Foundation has been providing essential medical supplies to several government and private hospitals, as well as police stations.

Essar Meal Project
Successfully provided 9.47 lakh meals so far –
- Over 250,000 meals routed through CM Support to Maharashtra’s Mumbai district – Govandi and Mahul slum pockets. Over 31,000 meals routed to the Collector of Kalbadevi (Maharashtra, Mumbai)
- Meals/ dry ration/ vegetable kits provided to slum dwellers, migrant labourers, police force, marginalised families, ragpickers, orphanages, transgenders and families in remote villages/ Adivasi tribes from Maharashtra (Mumbai, Greater Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Lonavala), Delhi, Tamil Nadu (Chennai and Toothukudi), Madhya Pradesh (Mahan), Gujarat (Salaya and Hazira), Odisha (Paradip and Atharbanki), West Bengal (Raniganj and Duragpur) and Jharkhand (Bokaro)
Ready to Eat (RTE) meals served to frontline warriors, i.e. doctors at government hospitals in Maharashtra (South Mumbai) and the Police Force in Maharashtra’s Mumbai, Greater Mumbai, DCP Port Zone and Nasik
Essar Health Project
- Installed a Walk-in Sample Kiosk (WISK) at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital Chennai, Tamil Nadu
- Over 100,000 3Ply masks, 8500 N95 masks, 2000 protective gloves, hand sanitisers and hand soaps supplied across –
- 10+ government/ municipal and private hospitals in Maharashtra (Mumbai and Greater Mumbai) and Chennai (Anna Salai)
- 9 police stations in Maharashtra (Mumbai and Greater Mumbai), Gujarat (Rajkot and Jamnagar)
- Safai Sathis (ragpickers) of Maharashtra (Mumbai)
- 8200+ villagers across 6 villages in Madhya Pradesh (Mahan)
- 500+ families in Odisha (Paradip)
- CISF Bhopal Airport Unit of Madhya Pradesh
- Over 5,000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for frontline doctors provided across government/ municipal and private hospitals in Mumbai, Greater Mumbai and Gujarat
- Sanitisation and bleaching powder sprinkled at local schools, hospitals, police station, Government vehicles, and townships in 6 villages of Madhya Pradesh’s Mahan district
- Conducted training and awareness programmes on sanitisation and social distancing
The Rainbow Project
- 1,000 packets of sanitary napkins procured from Myna Mahila Foundation, a women-centric micro-entrepreneurship venture, and distributed in Mumbai’s slum communities by field partners – YUVA
- URJA Trust, a shelter home for daily-wage women with abuse and domestic violence backgrounds, has been provided with a month’s supplies of essentials like sanitary napkins, handwash packets, antiseptic liquid, soaps and detergents
- Rescue efforts, financial support, and supply of food/essentials extended to members of the transgender community. Over 200 transpersons were provided relief in Noida (Delhi), Dharavi (Mumbai) and Thotukoodi (Tamil Nadu). Intensive coordination with the joint working groups is underway to consolidate structured relief efforts for transpersons
Essar Covid-19 Relief Fund – a call for ‘Personal Social Responsibility’
The voluntary ‘Essar Covid-19 Relief Fund contribution’ campaign has been launched to allow Essar employees the opportunity to make personal monetary contributions towards Essar Foundation’s Covid-19 relief efforts. The Fund is being expanded externally also, involving other corporates to create a syndicated fund for extending relief to the most marginalised, vulnerable and neglected groups of our communities.

We commend the Government for taking bold lockdown measures. What is heartening is that the finance ministry and RBI have also announced a host of measures to ease the pain for consumers and keep the economy buoyant. These are unprecedented times, however, Essarites have always been resilient in the face of adversity. We are certain that Essar, India and the world will successfully tide over this situation.
