Double digit growth continues at essar ports

Essar Ports, which operates four terminals on the east and west coasts of India, registered a 20.09% increase in cargo volumes in the third quarter of the current financial year, achieving a total throughput of 14.02 million tonnes. The increase was driven primarily by strong performances at terminals in Salaya and Vizag ports and has been facilitated by ongoing investment in capacity expansion at Essar Ports’ facilities.

The combined capacity of ports and terminals operated by the company is now around 110 million tonnes a year. Over the last financial year the company handled around 40 million tonnes, but this is expected to increase to around 60 million tonnes in 2020/2021.

Rajiv Agarwal, managing director and chief executive at Essar Ports, said: “Our continuous focus on increasing handling capacity through upgrades and mechanisation, and driving operational efficiencies, has helped in recording strong growth.”

In December Essar’s Hazira port handled more than 2 million tonnes of bulk cargo for AM/NS India, formerly Essar Steel. Ongoing modular expansion at Hazira will enable the port to handle increased volumes for existing customers in this sector.
