CIOs emerge as strategists during Covid-19
The outbreak of Covid-19 crisis has caught most enterprises by a sudden shock for which they are not prepared. Corporates were going through with the biggest challenge with the governments announcing lockdowns across the globe to protect citizens. Countries and corporations around the world are tirelessly fighting Covid-19 with different approach.
The business world is facing a new reality where traditional work practices are being challenged. Digitization has emerged as the single most important factor for an organization to remain future-ready. CIO’s are expected to leverage technology for enabling all business functions and meeting the digital demands of its employees, partners and customers amid lockdown and enabled new services to prevent any impact on business.
Employees across locations were assigned laptops and access to systems / Applications / Productivity tools over VPN or private cloud to help them in supporting business. VPN clients with Multi Factor Authentication is rolled out quickly and made sure 100 percent of team members are able to access the applications from their home seamlessly.
CIOs combined the application and Infrastructure solutions and digital capabilities to provide to the users an efficient remote working experience. CIOs provided audio and video conferencing tools that help the employees attend daily reviews, meetings and collaborate with colleagues, customers and partners.
CIOs have been the key technology strategists who have ensured the businesses run without disruption by adopting business continuity planning and activating disaster recovery. They ensured right resources, tools and technologies along with the IT infrastructure to ensure strong performance as well as productivity of the employees. Strengthening collaboration with cloud-based software played an important role in ensuring effective virtual meetings.
Work from home has been a challenging task and it requires a change in processes apart from just tackling the technical issues. With all the users working remotely, enterprises could quickly scale up the infrastructure and provide all the required services just in time.
Security was the major concern that prevented them from allowing work from earlier. Fixing all these
security risks became the first priority for CIOs. While WFH is going to be the new normal, it can be implemented since it has immense benefits including faster business transactions even though employee is physically not present in office. Employees are also motivated as they can save time in traveling. From an organization perspective, there is no need to provide a permanent seating place and other provisions.
This is a great opportunity for organizations to test the work-from-home concept. All organizations will be keeping an eye on the overall productivity of their workforce to make sure this concept works out. WFH concept is going to prove that people can be just as productive and even more productive working from home.
Gartner expects some of their employees who were forced to work from home because of the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic to continue working remotely after the pandemic ends. This has pushed industries for a new online behaviour.
I believe that the current situation will fuel demand of being digital-first for both business, customers and partners.
