Essar Steel Ltd (ESL) has appointed Mr Vikram Amin, till recently president-director of PT Essar Dhananjaya in Jakarta, as its new Executive Director. Mr Amin, 43, has been inducted into the board of ESL and he will be based at Hazira. His responsibilities include marketing, production operations, materials, human resources and accounts. He has done Masters In Business Administration for Syracuse University, USA.
Mr Amin had been holding the position of president-director at Essar's Indonesian venture since 1998, having taken over as Director Marketing, Essar Dhananjaya in 1996. He joined the Essar Group in 1987 and has held various assignments ranging from offshore construction to onshore and offshore drilling operations.
He was the key figure in Essar’s foray into overseas drilling contracts in Indonesia and the Middle-East. Earlier, he had moved to the Middle-East in 1992 and from Dubai went about developing the export market for HBI and hot rolled coils there and also in African countries.
Mr Amin is also responsible for Essar Dhananjay’s entry into the export market to counter the effects of the Indonesian economic crisis in the year 1998, thereby developing a diverse offshore customer base for the Company.
He played a major role in improving the financial position of the company, by reducing operating and overhead costs, ramped the production up to full capacity to obtain growth in sales volume and value as also in restructuring long-term debt with various banks and financial institutions (FIs).
