Achieving
geographic spread of its businesses is a key element
in Essars global strategy. With this aim,
the Company is actively seeking to position itself
closer to either the end markets for its products
or to the source of raw materials and energy reserves.
Essar acquired Algoma Steel in Canada with a view
to gain access to the lucrative North American
market. Essar has also acquired Minnesota Steel
LLC, a company located in the USA that controls
iron ore resources in excess of 1.4 billion tonnes.
Besides the plants in Hazira and the Americas,
Essar has a steel plant in Indonesia with a 400,000-tonne
cold-rolling facility and a 150,000-tonne galvanizing
facility. Greenfield projects in Vietnam (a hot
strip mill with an annual capacity of two million
tonnes) and Trinidad and Tobago (an integrated
steel plant with an annual capacity of 2.5 million
tonnes) are also under way.
