buys India's First Double Hull VLCC |

Essar Shipping has today
taken delivery of a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) - MT
Ashna - built in K orea. The acquisition is in line with
Essar Shipping's objective of becoming a major player in
the energy transportation business.
This 301,428 DWT vessel
is the largest ship ever to be bought and owned by an Indian
shipping company. The vessel is also first double hull,
double bottom VLCC to be bought by an Indian company. It
has the capacity to carry 2 million barrels of crude oil
and is 330 metre long and 62.6 metre in height. The size
of the vessel is equivalent to three football fields and
is almost as tall as twenty-storey building. |
With the acquisition of
this vessel, the fleet of Essar has gone upto 30 with a
total DWT of 1.65 million. All its six suezmax tankers
are double hull and double bottom and has built up a reputation
for its quality. It has an enviable track record of accident
free/pollution free transportation of crude oil. Essar
Shipping has been conferred the "Most Quality Conscious
Indian Shipping Company" by DG Shipping for the year
2002.
