Essar Shipping Limited's Mini Bulk Carrier, "M.V. Nand Kawas" rescued from severe storm
December 18, 2003
M.V. Nand Kawas, a 2200 dwt Mini Bulk Carrier (MBC) owned and operated by Essar Shipping Limited (ESL), met with severe weather conditions due to the cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal south of Visakhapatnam on December 15, 2003. The vessel was on a loaded passage from Vizag (East Coast of India) to Hazira (West Coast of India).

All emergency procedures were immediately activated by the Company including alerting the Director General of Shipping (DG Shipping), Coast Guard and the other authorities concerned. A message was also sent to all ships in the vicinity for rendering assistance to the disabled vessel. ESL's own two Capesize Bulk Carriers were also immediately diverted to the location of Nand Kawas.
ESL maintained constant vigil from its Marine Contingency Cell and the situation was dealt with utmost diligence. ESL was in constant touch with the DG Shipping and other senior officials, who provided appropriate guidance and assistance in the situation.

Nand Kawas has since been towed to Chennai where she will undergo necessary repairs before recommencing her voyage.

The above incidence will not have any impact on the operations and earnings of the Company.
