Limited's Mini Bulk Carrier, "M.V. Nand Kawas" rescued
from severe storm

M.V. Nand Kawas, a 2200
dwt Mini Bulk Carrier (MBC) owned and operated by Essar
Shipping Limited (ESL), met with severe weather conditions
due to the cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal south of
Visakhapatnam on December 15, 2003. The vessel was on a
loaded passage from Vizag (East Coast of India) to Hazira
(West Coast of India).
All emergency procedures were immediately
activated by the Company including alerting the Director
General of Shipping (DG Shipping), Coast Guard and the
other authorities concerned. A message was also sent to
all ships in the vicinity for rendering assistance to the
disabled vessel. ESL's own two Capesize Bulk Carriers
were also immediately diverted to the location of Nand
Kawas.
ESL maintained constant
vigil from its Marine Contingency Cell and the situation
was dealt with utmost diligence. ESL was in constant touch
with the DG Shipping and other senior officials, who provided
appropriate guidance and assistance in the situation.
Nand
Kawas has since been towed to Chennai where she will undergo
necessary repairs before recommencing her voyage.
The above
incidence will not have any impact on the operations and
earnings of the Company.
