Essar's Cambay exploration soon
Business Standard - August 15, 2003
Essar Oil (EOL), which formally got the Cambay basin in Gujarat (CB-ON-3) from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) through a handing-over-agreement on June 30, now plans to acquire 3D seismic data by this November and commence exploratory drilling after identifying oil prospects.

In a presentation to officials of the ministry of petroleum and natural gas in Mumbai on August 7, Essar officials said the initial study in the exploration and production site indicates multiple hydrocarbon prospects at various stratigraphic levels, including those in Unawa area.
"The estimated oil reserve is in the range of 50 million barrels," the company told the North Block officials. The 574 sq km block, which was awarded to Essar following seventh round bidding in 1994, is located mainly in Mehsana district and partly in Patan district of Gujarat.

Geologically, the southern part of the block falls in the eastern rising flanks of Ahmedabad-Mehsana tectonic block, whereas the northern portion falls in eastern rising flanks of Tharad-Patan tectonic block of the Cambay basin.

EOL has a participation interest of 100 per cent and was awarded the PEL contract during February this year, almost nine years since it was awarded the block in the bidding.

In a presentation to the department officials, EOL officials said the review of available geoscientific data for identification of hydrocarbon prospects in the block is now completed as per the minimum work program in production sharing contract (PSC) for phase-1 exploration.

"Interpretation of existing 2D seismic data is completed with the help of consultant geophysicist and report also has been submitted in this respect. The study indicates multiple hydrocarbon prospects at various stratigraphic levels, among which three prospects are prominent towards southwest (Kharwada area), middle (Unawa area) and southeast (north Mansa area)," the Essar Oil presentation said.

EOL also told the ministry officials that tender for 3D seismic survey on contract basis over an area of about 70 square km, as per the PSC, is finalised and will be released shortly.

"This area also holds good potential for exploration for coal bed methane. Essar Oil had earlier drilled a few exploratory wells and has established the methane gas deposit. Essar will also commence coal bed methane extraction after receiving all the necessary approvals," a company source said.

In addition, Essar also has other four exploration blocks. Recently, the ministry of petroleum and natural gas has cleared the way for signing of the PSC for Ratna and R series oil field.

The signing of the PSC is subject to compliance of standard terms by Essar Oil. The initial oil in place of all these fields is about 500 million barrel.

"The recoverable reserves are estimated at 100 million barrels, of which 10 million barrels have already been recovered by ONGC. The work programme at Ratna envisages drilling over 30 wells through the installation of four platforms and modifications in the existing Ratna A platform," the source said.
