The Gujarat Water Supply & Sewerage Board (GWSSB) felicitated Essar for its outstanding performance in Infrastructure Projects in the State of Gujarat during the year 2001-2002 and for the timely completion of the water pipeline project.

The award was presented by Shri. Narendra Modi, Honourable Chief Minister of Gujarat to Mr. Shashi Ruia, Chairman, Essar Group of companies. The award was conferred by Shri. Modi at a function held at Maliya to inaugurate the 108.5 km water pipeline project on Sunday, May 19.

This project will provide safe drinking water to 8215 villages and 135 towns in the districts of Saurashtra, Kutch, North Gujarat and Panchmanals. Essar completed the three projects in just under a year and one and a half months ahead of schedule.
Essar in the past two-three years have laid 463 kms of water pipelines worth more than Rs.500 crores and have laid about 150 kms of the Narmada Canal. Essar recently has diversified into roads and highways along with UEM, a construction company, owned by the Govt. of Malaysia. This joint venture company bagged a Rs.760 crore highway project in Karnataka. This highway connecting Tumkur to Haveri, a distance of 200 kms, is part of the Hon. Prime Minister Shri. A B Vajpayee's dream project - the golden quadrilateral, connecting all the metros of the country.

Reacting to the felicitation received by Essar, Mr. Shashi Ruia, said, "We are happy that the state has recognised Essar's contribution to Gujarat and for successfully commissioning this project ahead of time. We are definitely honoured by this award from the state government and I am sure this will motivate us to do better in the future."
Background of the water pipeline projects:
Essar was awarded two major water supply contracts worth Rs.173 cr. (C/NC-6 & C/NC-7) by the Gujarat Water Supply & Sewerage Board (GWSSB) in May 2001. Subsequently in September 2001, along with Engineering Projects India Limited, a GOI undertaking, bagged a drinking water pipeline contract (C/NC-12) worth Rs.79.84 cr.
C/NC-6 & C/NC-7
The contract included construction of sumps, pump houses, electrical work including two 66 K V sub-stations and supplying, manufacturing and laying of 60 kms steel pipeline having finished diametre of 2200mm from Maliya to Morvi and from Morvi to Tankara. Further, it also involved designing and constructing pumping stations at Maliya and Morvi along with water sumps having capacity of 440 Mld and 380 Mld respectively. In these projects 55,000 tons of steel were consumed.
C/NC-12
The contract involved fabrication, supply, external concrete coating, laying and jointing including internal cement mortar lining, water transmission main from Tankara to Guaridad in Rajkot district. It also involves construction of two pumping stations along with the sumps with all civil, mechanical and instrumentation works. The pipeline will transmit 245 MLD of drinking water drawn from the Tankara sump through 48.5 kms long mild steel pipeline to Aji connecting the Bhader pipeline. This bulk water transmission pipeline would benefit rural and urban population of villages of Rajkot and Jamnagar districts. Both these contracts awarded by Gujarat Water Supply & Sewerage Board were on an EPC basis.

During the last year, Essar commissioned five drinking water supply projects in Gujarat as an EPC contractor. These included Darohi Regional Water Supply Scheme II & III in Mehsana District, North Gujarat, Ozat II Water Supply Scheme in Junagadh district, SPP- 2 in Ahmedabad district and NC - 1 in Bhavnagar district. These projects involved laying of about 300 kms of pipeline.
Essar is one of the leading EPC contractors in the country today, having executed large industrial projects (projects worth over Rs.13,000 cr.) like steel plants, a refinery, power plants, infrastructure projects like construction of canals and hydraulic structures, cross-country pipelines (water, oil and gas). Essar is fully-equipped in terms of expert manpower comprising 500 well-trained engineers and specialised construction equipment including 150 cranes.

The construction division of Essar is part of the Rs17,000 cr industrial giant, the Essar Group. Essar has interests in Steel, Shipping, Power, Oil and Telecom with a majority of its investments being in Gujarat. Essar operates a 24,00,000 tonnes per year steel plant and a 515 MW power plant both at Hazira, near Surat and is constructing a 1,05,00,000 tonnes a year refinery in Vadinar.
