This outstanding achievement reiterates the company’s commitment to safety and demonstrates that at VPCL, our commitment is effectively translated into action when it comes to safe work practices.
At a small event to commemorate the achievement, KB Makadia, Head-VPCL, explained
the journey and factors contributing to the achievement of 2,000 LTI-free days.
VPCL’s milestone was achieved through three key areas of focus: plant,
systems and people.
The plant was upgraded to reduce interactions with moving equipment via safe access and to reduce manual handling. Systems have also been improved, focusing on doing the basics exceptionally well, including auditing, incident management and hazard identification. People participation has been key to VPCL’s success. This milestone would not have been achieved without the support of an engaged workforce and an uncompromising approach towards safety.
Some of the activities that enabled this achievement include:
- Developing a structured behavior-based safety management system.
- Employee participation in defect identifications related to safety through institutionalized processes such as Gemba Kaizen and near miss reporting.
- Timely closure of near misses reported and 95 per cent compliance of near miss reporting was because of active involvement of employees in the safety management process.
