June 12, is observed as World Day against Child Labour, to draw attention to
the fact that hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are
engaged in work that deprives them of adequate education, health, leisure and
basic freedoms.
Essar Power Jharkhand (EPJL) joined hands with the State Labour Commission (Jharkhand) in an effort to rid neighboring village clusters of child labor. The campaign, launched on June 12, kicked off with a pledge by our employees to proactively work towards keeping the locality of their residences and work areas free of child labor.
School is the best place to work
Education is one of the Essar Foundation’s major focus areas. It is running
several programs to encourage enrollment in schools and to improve the quality
of teaching.
On this occasion, 75 children from neighboring villages stood together with Essar volunteers in campaigning for the cause. On June 28, the children participated in a painting competition on the theme, ‘Stop Child Labour – School is the best place to work’. They subsequently took a rally around six villages, displaying the best paintings, banners, posters and pamphlets creating awareness about this social evil.
