Essar Steel India has become the first steel producer in the country to have its carbon dioxide (CO2) emission data reporting verified to ISO 140064 standards.
Although the company has been reporting its CO2 emissions to the World Steel Association (WSA) and the international
Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), this is the first
time its reporting system has been verified by external experts of the international
certification agency DNV.
The certification process began with DNV carrying out a rigorous three-day audit of the entire CO2 reporting system. DNV officials, after personally checking the company's data collection with SAP / costing backup (two-level verification) at the Hazira facility, tallied all the fuel / energy / electricity consumption, and all carbon-bearing inputs / outputs. The findings showed less than 1 per cent variation among different plant data capturing systems, a significant achievement that is testament that calculations and reporting of CO2 as per WSA methodology is accurate.
The Essar Steel team will now incorporate the recommendations made by DNV to further improve its CO2 emission reporting system both in-house and to external forums.
