On June 17, 2012 Essar Steel Hazira, commenced operation of its Recirculation
Degassing with top oxygen blowing (RH-TOB) unit, in its Steel Melt Shop 2 (SMP-2). This
the second such unit in Hazira Steel, and it is a key component in the capacity
expansion of the facility to 10 MTPA; the first unit is in SMP-1, which is part
of the basic manufacturing plant.
RH-TOB unit: The RH process is suitable for the rapid degassing of a large amount of molten steel. In the production of high-grade steel, a process called vacuum degassing is used to remove such gas components as hydrogen before casting the molten steel. The RH-TOB unit also allows for addition of ferro alloys to liquid steel for getting special characteristics as per requirement.
The achievement of this milestone is testament to the teamwork of Essarites, equipment supplier Mevac, UK, and our contractors.
Earlier, on May 29, the team commenced operations at a Lime Plant unit –
Kiln No 7 – also in SMP-2, with its first batch of lime production.
Kiln No 7 has a production capacity of 500 tonnes per day (TPD); SMP-2 has three kilns – two lime furnaces and one dolime furnace – in operation with the production capacity of 500 TPD each. In SMP-2, waste Corex gas is being utilized for heating the furnace, instead of natural gas.
