The company undertakes substantial CSR activity in the region under the aegis of the Jai Johar Seva Sansthan, fulfilling social responsibilities such as promotion of education, providing scholarships, organizing medical camps, self-help programs, building infrastructure and promoting community development to uplift the people and to provide them basic amenities.
Essar Steel’s beneficiation plant project at Kirandul is located in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh state. As a part of Essar’s commitment to the upliftment of tribal villages in the district, sewing machines were distributed to the needy women of Kirandul village to enable them to learn a new skill, and earn independently. At a function held in the settlement on May 16, 2011, five machines were distributed, which would effectively benefit 15 women and their families.
The company, through the Essar Foundation, works towards enabling and enriching the communities around the areas where its plants are located. This program was part of the Essar Foundation’s Shakti (empowerment) scheme. And it’s just the beginning – the scheme will cover many more villages in Dantewada and Sukma districts.
A month earlier, Essar sponsored an Inter-State Cricket Tournament, at village Kirandul. A total of 176 players from 16 local cricket clubs and village teams, from the states of Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, participated in tournament.
Essar sponsored the prize money and made arrangements for accommodation at the finals, which was held at the Football Ground, Kirandul on April 14, 2011.
Essar Foundation, through its Samaj Mitra (Friend of the Community) scheme, encourages and supports sport events in Dantewada and Sukma districts to give a boost to the individual talent of youth and build up their confidence to participate at higher levels of sport.
