Two Essar companies, Essar Steel and Essar Shipping, were recognized at the 4th FE EVI Green Business Leadership Awards 2011-12.Essar Steel was recognized as the sustainability leader in the metals sector, Essar Shipping received special recognition for its unique initiatives for promoting sustainability, combating climate change and promoting disclosure of non-financial performance.
The awards, jointly constituted by Financial Express newspaper and Emergent Ventures India (EVI), an environment and carbon advisory, in 2008, recognize Indian corporations and business leaders that have spearheaded and implemented successful sustainability practices and policies at their organizations.
The awards were declared based on the FE-EVI Green Business Survey 2011-12. The survey targeted 580 firms in India shortlisted on the basis of their annual turnover. A total of 73 companies, including Essar Steel and Essar Shipping, across 20 sectors participated in the survey and reported on key sustainability metrics such as GHG emissions, energy use, water and waste management. In addition, the survey also mapped the efforts and policies that companies are putting in place towards sustainable practices and mitigating environmental risks.
The awards jury comprised eminent industry leaders, thought leaders and policy makers including Dr PC Jain, Chairman - Indian Green Building Council, V Subramanian, CEO - Indian Wind Energy Association, and Vinod Kala, Founder - EVI.
Sonal Kohli, Lead - Sustainability, Essar, accepted the awards on behalf of the company, from Dr M Veerappa Moily, Union Minster for Corporate Affairs, at a glittering award ceremony held in New Delhi, on World Environment Day, June 5, 2012.
