Land Drilling Rig MR 3, owned and operated by Essar Oilfield Services (EOSIL), achieved 365 days with Zero lost time incident (LTI) on May 17, 2012. The rig is currently working in Durgapur, West Bengal, for Essar Exploration & Production (EEPL).
The complex and challenging nature of the work involved in successfully operating a drilling rig calls for high emphasis on safety. Ensuring safety in daily operations involves building a safety culture among the 60-strong regular rig crew as well as among a continuous stream of new people from third-party service providers. To add to these challenges, there are also non-routine operations, such as rig moves, to be carried out which, if not monitored properly, can lead to accidents.
Despite these challenges, significant improvement has been made on the rig over the last year in the areas of asset integrity, safety during rig move operations, line management responsibility and accountability on HSE, crew safety awareness and housekeeping. The team of MR 3 took up these challenges in earnest and have used best industry practices to address these specialized safety needs.
The entire EOSIL team has worked in a very cohesive fashion to meet all requirements for an excellent safety record.
Appreciating these efforts, Ankur Gupta, CEO – EOSIL, said “Our goal is to establish world-class standards in Durgapur operations. This QHSE achievement, coming close on the heels of ‘No LTI’ achievements on MR 1 (one year) and the Essar Wildcat (three years), emphasizes the huge steps we have taken in the realm of QHSE. All praise to the MR 3 base and rig staff for their unyielding devotion to safety that has made this possible.”
AR Ramakrishnan, MD – Essar Shipping, congratulated the MR 3 team saying, “This achievement reflects the deep commitment of the EOSIL team, both at site and in the office, towards maintaining high standards of safety and quality in operations. This sustained philosophy of operations will enable EOSIL to scale greater heights in the years ahead.”
